SOFTBALL FIELD GETS IMPROVEMENTS

Community College adds batting cages and bull pens to center field area

With the cancellation of the softball season, Yavapai Community College has been making improvements to its baseball and softball fields.  An earlier Blog outlined improvements made to the baseball field.

Regarding the softball field, Athletic Director Brad Clifford told radio station KYCA that “we’re going to be putting some batting cages in center field” with coverings. It is also putting some “bullpens in the outfield as well.”

According to Clifford, this makes the softball field “more conducive to what we are doing with our softball program.”

NAU ELIMINATES NON-TENURED FACULTY BY MORE THAN 100

Triggered by fear of lower fall enrollment; claimed some faculty let go without severance and less than a week of health insurance

In a story written by Arizona Republic reporter Rachel Leingang, which appeared  June 12, 2020, it was reported that Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff had eliminated more than 100 faculty positions.  All of them were non-tenured faculty.

Although the University has not released the actual number let go, most believe the figure is more than 100, somewhere around 10% of total faculty. The decision was made because of fear of reduced fall enrollment.

Several employees told the Arizona Republic  that they were “devastated to see their positions eliminated.” They also said they had courses scheduled for the upcoming semester that had full or near-full enrollment, so they were surprised to be let go.

There have been a flurry of letters to the editor from professors, parents and alumni in the Arizona Daily Sun  questioning why eliminating these employees’ contracts happened before other, broader efforts were made to save money. History professor Leilah Danielson wrote in one letter. “But the degree, timing, and extent of these cuts is unprecedented and unnecessarily callous.”

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL TEAM LEADS IN GPA AVERAGE WITH 3.77; ALL FOUR ATHLETIC TEAMS ACCOUNT FOR TOTAL OF 57 ATHLETES PLACED ON SPRING HONOR ROLL

Must have grade point average of 3.0 or above to qualify

Fifty-seven of Yavapai Community College’s athletic team members made the Athletic Director’s Honor roll in spring 2020.   In order to qualify, a student athlete must have attained a 3.0 grade point average or above.

According to Community College President Lisa Rhine, nineteen of the student athletes scored a perfect 4.0 grade point average. In addition, 23 student athletes received National Junior College Athletic Association Academic student athlete awards.

The Women’s Volleyball team lead team averages with an outstanding 3.77 GPA.  That team was followed by the Men’s Soccer team with a 3.59 G.P.A., the baseball team with a 3.32 average, and the softball team with a 3.27 average.

YAVAPAI COMMUNITY COLLEGE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL PARTNERSHIP WITH BLUEFRAME TECHNOLOGY

BlueFrame  will video stream sporting events on BlueFrame’s sports network; part of exclusive Prescott based athletic department’s long-term vision for the department

The Yavapai Community College Athletic Department announced  that BlueFrame Technology will be its official streaming partner starting on July 1, 2020.  The company will produce live and archived broadcasts through Yavapai’s ‘channel’ on BlueFrame’s Team1Sports network.  The network  is available on Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Roku. Broadcasts will also be accessible on www.goroughriders.com/.

Kelsey English, Assistant Athletic Director-Operations, said that “Streaming is an important part to connect with our alumni, fans, and supporters. We have worked hard during this downtime of athletics to improve our athletic experience. This partnership, along with our recently named Adidas apparel agreement, are just two more things to help with our long term vision of the department.”

It is noted that all of the major athletic programs are operated from the Prescott Campus.  In addition, all events associated with the programs are played in either Prescott or Prescott Valley.  None are involved in the Verde Valley.

YAVAPAI COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION LAUNCHES PROGRAM TO COMMEMORATE A LOVED ONE LOST TO COVID–19 BY ANY YC STUDENT OR EMPLOYEE

Memorial benches can be erected on campuses in their honor

The Yavapai Community College Foundation is launching a program to commemorate a loved one lost to COVID-19 by any YC student or employee. The announcement was made by President Lisa Rhine at her June 10 update.

Dr. Rhine said that there are members of the Yavapai Community College who are grieving the loss of a family member because of the pandemic. She also said that if someone in the Yavapai Community College family wanted to commemorate that family member, the Foundation has created a program where benches with the name of that family member will be placed at various campuses.

Anyone interested in commemorating a family member lost because of COVID-19 should contact the Foundation office.

MARICOPA GOVERNING BOARD REJECTS REDUCING TUITION BY 25%; WILL INVEST UP TO $13.5 MILLION IN SCHOLARSHIPS AND $500,000 IN FALL AND SPRING MARKETING CAMPAIGN

Sets tuition at a flat rate of $1020 for Arizona’s residents taking 12 credits or more per semester

The Maricopa Community College Governing Board at its  meeting on Tuesday, June 9  rejected a proposal that would have reduced tuition for the fall and spring semesters by 25%. Rather, it approved a flat tuition rate of $1020 for Arizona residents taking 12 credits or more per semester. In addition, it approved allowing out-of-state students to pay the in-state tuition rate if they sign up to take six or fewer credit hours per semester.

The Board also approved spending up to $13.5 million in scholarships to attract students.  Finally, it agreed to commit  up to $500,000 to run a marketing campaign to try to encourage more  students to enroll for the fall  and spring  semesters.

DR RHINE ADDRESSES FEAR AND RIGHTEOUS ANGER OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY

Says U.S. has failed to uphold unspoken societal contract to protect each other fairly and justly; must stand against racism together

In a short address to faculty, staff and students on June 3, Yavapai Community College president Dr. Lisa Rhine asserted that as a society the United States has failed to uphold the unspoken societal contract to protect each other fairly and justly.  She said that the community must take a stand against racism.

She also said that the College is taking immediate action to “re-examine our own practices and ensure we continue to implement policies, trainings, and accountabilities to protect our students, staff, and faculty of color.”   She said that in “our roles as educators, researchers, professionals and community leaders, we must prepare those in our classrooms to participate vigorously in civic discourse and democracy.” Moreover, the “killings and mistreatment of citizens must stop.

YAVAPAI COMMUNITY COLLEGE ADDS STADIUM SEATING AND OTHER ACCOUTERMENTS TO BASEBALL FIELD

Agrees to Adidas official apparel and footwear partnership in order to generate revenue for athletic department

The Yavapai Community College has made significant improvements to its baseball athletic facilities. It has added new stadium seating and a batting cage at Rough Rider Park/
Bill Valley field in Prescott.  The park is adjacent to the Prescott Campus and is a part of the Prescott park system. The College has an agreement to use the facility at minimal charge.

The funds for the improved facilities, according to the College, came from its athletic boosters.

The College also announced that effective July 1 Adidas will be the official apparel and footwear provider for all College teams. The College says that this financial agreement will help the athletic department to become a revenue generator.

YAVAPAI COMMUNITY COLLEGE PRESIDENTS ASKS FOR RE-EXAMINATION OF CAMPUS PRACTICES REGARDING TREATMENT OF STUDENTS OF COLOR

Asking Campus Chief of Police and YC Respect Committee to look at tangible and inclusive ways to foster a healthy relationship between Campus law enforcement and the communities of color

Yavapai Community College president Dr. Lisa Rhine has asked the College Police Chief and the College Respect Committee to “look at tangible and inclusive ways to foster a healthy relationship between our law enforcement and the communities of color who depend on our officers of the law to model both justice and compassion.”

In a letter on this issue, she wrote that “in our roles as educators, researchers, professionals and community leaders, we must prepare those in our classrooms to participate vigorously in civic discourse and democracy. For a robust civil discourse requires open, honest dialog: The bottom line is the killings and mistreatment of citizens must stop. The system as it stands must change, from the inside out.”

SOUTHWEST WINE CENTER REOPENS VIA RESERVATION-ONLY FOR PRIVATE TASTINGS

May reserve a private tasting of wine only on Saturday or Sunday

The Yavapai Community College Southwest Wine Center, located on the Verde Valley Campus in Clarkdale, has reopened for private wine tastings on a limited basis.  The tastings must be by reservation.  They are limited to either Saturday or Sunday.

The Center also is now offering pick-up of wine by appointment.

To book a reservation, you must go to the Center’s website, which you may reach by clicking here.  You may call at 928-634-6566 to schedule a time to pick up some of the excellent wine available at the Center.
